Dragon's Blood Lily (Ariocarpus agavoides) is a rare and unique cactus species found in the wild in Mexico. It has two natural habitats, one in Tamaulipas state and another in San Luis Potosi. The Dragon's Blood Lily grows on flat plains and limestone hills at an altitude of around 1,200 meters above sea level where summers are wet but winters are dry.

Due to over-collection for the ornamental plant trade, agricultural activities, construction projects, livestock farming and soil erosion combined with local children eating this plant as a sweet treat, its wild populations are under threat or even facing extinction. The name "agavoides" means "similar to Agave", which I find it most resembles Agave albopilosa; interestingly they inhabit within 100 miles of each other.

However unlike true Agaves these deep green 'leaves' are actually tubercles. Some large mature plants due to their slow growth can sell for thousands of dollars.

The flowers of this lily-like cactus bloom from the center forming a radial pattern resembling a flower bud about to open up into a star-shaped bloom with five petals that range from white to pinkish-red color depending on the variety growing conditions.

These flowers have no noticeable scent but emit an intoxicating fragrance only detectable by bees who visit them exclusively pollinating these blooms making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide especially among those who appreciate unique specimens like me!
