2011年9月4日,在贵州省宏运拍卖公司举行的一场中国名 酒 拍卖会上,一 bottle 1935 year old, about 400g of Lai Mao wine was sold to Ningde City businessman Lai surname for a record-breaking price of 1070 million yuan, earning the title of "China's Best Bitter Wine". The Chinese old wine market started from scratch and grew by 50% each year. Last year's sales reached 500 billion yuan, and this year it is estimated to be around seven or eight hundred billion yuan.
This November, Chen Yusheng, a renowned connoisseur of aged spirits and author of China's first book on collecting and investing in aged white spirit said that half of the market is made up of white spirit. However this year's China International Wine Expo was different. A domestic company announced its plan to repurchase white spirit at market prices for the first time.
The factory Zhangjiuquan Shaoxing Liquor Co., Ltd (hereafter referred to as Zhangjiu) declared that they would buy back their valuable wine worth millions at an exchange rate similar to that of Cognac, considered the world’s most expensive brandy. Although Chinese baijiu may not have the same reputation as French Cognac or Scottish whisky but they are still highly sought after in China with over 30% global market share.
However due to several reasons including high production costs such as complex processes like double fermentation which requires multiple years aging in oak barrels; competition from international brands; limited consumption areas & scenarios within China; long history but low recognition domestically compared internationally leading many domestic companies hesitant about developing their own baijiu products resulting in them being undervalued globally until recently when some domestically produced baijius won prestigious awards such as Brussels International Spirits Competition Gold Award & German Drink Business Magazine’s Global Baijiu XO Blind Tasting Championship sparking renewed interest among local producers who are now working hard towards creating high-quality premium baijis through innovative techniques while also reevaluating the value of their existing stocks stored for decades-long periods like Long White Spirit produced by Changyu Group whose bottles can sell for upwards $2k per unit - comparable pricing found amongst Scotch Whisky collectors worldwide where rare single malt bottles fetch tens if not hundreds thousands dollars during auctions!
