Dragon's Blood Lily, a rare and exotic plant, has two natural habitats in Mexico. One is in the state of Tamaulipas, while the other is in San Luis Potosi. It grows on floodplain plains and limestone hills at an elevation of around 1,200 meters above sea level where summer rainfall is abundant. However, due to over-collection, agricultural activities, construction projects, livestock farming and soil erosion as well as local children who consume it as candy have led to threats to its wild population and even the brink of extinction.
The name "agavoides" means "similar to Agave," which I find fascinating because it resembles White-tip Agave (Agave albopilosa) - a coincidence given their proximity with only 100 miles between them. Unlike true Agaves however this plant's deep green "leaves" are actually tubercles or swellings.
Some large mature plants (likely poached from the wild) grow slowly enough that they can sell for thousands of dollars. The Dragon's Blood Lily flower head forms a rosette shape with hard rough small spines that are dark green.
Its stem is greenish-brown cylindrical near spherical top flat about 2-6 cm high slightly above ground diameter 4-8 cm with remainder buried underground like carrot roots.
The leaves or spines spread outwards not upright pointed tips flat faces length 3-7cm width 5-10mm without thorns or very few thorns long about 22 -4 mm near leaf tip white fluffy tufting.
Since it thrives in rainy summers on flooded plains which become soggy during wet seasons dragon blood lily enjoys plenty water but easily rot away during rest of year needs moderate watering spring autumn no winter water prefers good drainage soils low nitrogen fertilizer promotes growth
Winter drought preserves appearance prevents color change bottom watering significantly improves appearance retains 'fluffy' tip color tolerance down to -10°C
Propagate through seeds takes time often wait years before reaching flowering size many people choose grafting for faster growth
